Yéiitsoh Unleashed

“Yep, big storm. Yé’iitsoh has been unleashed from Mount Taylor.”

“What is Yé’iitsoh?”

“Yé’iitsoh is our devil spirit, the most malignant of all our bad guys. His father, Sun Bearer, Jóhonaa’éí wrapped him in zigzag lightning, and sent him to earth. During the time of creation, the earth was the home of many different types of evil creatures. Yé’iitsoh is the worst, though. He lives in a cave on Mount Taylor, dressed in flint armor, carries a large club, and sallies forth from his home in search of human prey.”

Rory and Katie were relaxing in their room at the El Tovar overlooking the Grand Canyon.

“This sure is a treat. Thanks, Rory, I feel special.”

Rory got out first and wandered around the room, drying his hair with a towel. The drape was wide open. That’s why they were staying here, for the view.

“Whoa, Katie come see this,” He could see across the canyon on his right, but the left was scuffed over, obscured by a brown-grey cloud glowing an ugly pink in the noon sun.

“Oh wow, that’s a haboob. It’s a dust storm from a thunderstorm cell. This is going to be a big storm, Rory.”

Suddenly a sharp zap flashed directly ahead of them. A zigzagging bolt of lightening struck on the ledge on their side of the canyon.

“Yep, big storm. Yé'iitsoh has been unleashed from Mount Taylor.”

“What is Yé'iitsoh, Katie?”

“Yé'iitsoh is our devil spirit, the most malignant of all our bad guys. His father, Sun Bearer, Jóhonaa'éí wrapped him in zigzag lightning, and sent him to earth. During the time of creation, the earth was the home of many different types of evil creatures. Yé'iitsoh is the worst, though. He lives in a cave on Mount Taylor, dressed in flint armor, carries a large club, and sallies forth from his home in search of human prey.”

“The dude loves Diné for dinner, huh?”

“I guess, and only Monster Slayer can stop him.”

“Let’s get back to camp and get things settled. I’ll get dressed, checkout and get the car. Are you ready?”

“Yes. I'll bring our bags.”

Rory closed the door with bags, arriving at the check-out desk the same time lights flickered on and off.

“Thanks Dr. Evans. You might want to wait this cell out. They are usually temporary,” the deskman said, referring to the thunderstorm activity.

“Oh, what, twenty minutes, like a cloudburst?”

“No, sometimes they last three hours.”

“Oh, I can’t wait, I’ve got burros I’m in charge of.”

“He felt a tingle, and looked up. “Did you feel that?”

The clerk looked up, and smiled.

“Lift up your hat, Doc. It’s static electricity, your hair’s up. There’s a lot of friction in the air. Just stay away from trees.”
